Information Systems Career Planning: Manufacturer Certifications or Masters Degree?
For any Information System Professional with experience, and for those with Bachelor's Degrees in hand. Looking for Opinions/Commentary from more experienced IT Professionals on long term planning, when the Goal is IS Management/CIO & IS Security Streams.A: Pursue various Manufacturer Certifications, such as Cisco CCNA, Cisco Security, Microsoft MCSE, and CompTIA Certifications (feel free to mention others). B: Pursue further education while working, focusing toward Information Technology Masters Degree in IS Security? Both options seem valid, looking for commentary. Many IS Technicians don't appear to have a clear path planned for their career advancement beyond Technologist, what are the benefits of each option, or other options for Technologists?

Best long term shot of getting into a CIO or other upper-mgr slot long term is a Master's. Just troll some of the online postings for Director, VP, or other C-level positions, most require a Masters.
But along with that will be the requirement of 10-15+ or more years in the industry, preferably with a rise-through-ranks experience. Most CIO's I know, were technicians at some point in the career. So really you will need both.
The certs to get you in the door and in a good paying position, then work on the Masters (it is a 2 year degree) as you get the experience.
In fact most companies have a continuing education reimbursement program.
