What is a colocation data center?

I’ve heard the term tossed around by my IT team, but I have absolutely no idea what it means and what relevance it has to our business. Help?

Colocation is simply where you put _your_ equipment in someone elses datacentre.

For clients who require custom hardware, specific security/access controls and high-uptime, colo is essential.

For those who need commodity hardware, standard configurations but still a dedicated and high-performance resource, then a dedicated-server rather than colo will be preferable as it becomes the providers responsibility to fix it at 3am when it breaks, rather than you driving 4 hours to the DC with a boot full of spares :)
