Merchant accounts are probably appropriate for many businesses once they get off the ground but for small business owners who are just getting started I would highly recommend using the most simple type of payment system... PayPal (http://www.paypal.com). Once the business is humming along a merchant account can be set up but it's hard to beat PayPal for newbies. Also if you are like me (a non techie) then you might want to consider hiring a reputable company to do your PayPal order form setup. We went with Secure Order Form (https://www.secureorderform.com/) because they built a custom order form for our precise application.
In any case I know that saving money is important for new startups so going with PayPal first and then moving into a merchant account was a winning formula for my own business.
That's a really good question. I don't have your specific answer, but I can say that http://paysimple.com/ is a fantastic company to use.
