It it a good idea to use social networking sites to promote your website?
It's a classified ads site and I just launched it last week. I'm a bit surprised however that I have been unable to solicit even one posting given the work I've done networking through social networking.

Yes definitely. Through social media you can build your social profile strong which provides a good signals to search engine. It will surely help you in many ways.
Sure, but SM can be slow as molasses. If you want to get the word out a lot faster, you're going to need to ADVERTISE.

Google Adwords might be a good start for you so you can get an idea behind the particular keyword phrases that people search for when looking for your service. I agree with Al.
I don't know your model, however I have found that you can start using social media as a good avenue for give-aways, contests, etc. Depending on the social network that you are using you will need to figure out ways to bring value to them first. That is how this game goes.
