Is it OK to post on other people's blogs?
I was given some advice recently, that in order to help create buzz about my company, I should post on other people's blog that are getting a lot of traffic. Is this common? Would I be violating some sort of blog etiquette if I did this?

Chad,
It's not a recommended practice. Imagine you are the owner of a store and have customers inside your shop. How would you feel if someone inside your store was soliciting your customers to shop at their store? Generally, people don't like solictors, online or on their porch.
If you want to attract customers, comment on what they are talking about. Share your knowledge and experience. This way you become a trusted source. Most blogs allow you to create a profile that will include your company name, website and detailed profile. When you comment, if people like what you have to say, they can check you and your company out. In the long run you will build your reputation as a trusted source who is sincere in doing business.
Best of luck!

I have to disagree with Leif here. That practice has a name (Guess blogging) and is a very popular way to create awareness for you name/brand. Of course, it won't be a competitor's blog, as Leif points out, they wouldn't allow it and for good reasons! But guess blogging to a blog related to your industry will reach new people that you wouldn't have reached otherwise.
Focus.com is a good example, they encourage people to write brief. Why on earth would someone want to spend sometime writing quality content and not post it on their site? Because focus.com receive a lot of qualified traffic and it will help you build reputation/awareness.
Doing guess blogging will help you become a trusted source. So just like Leif suggest, you can comment on popular blog that your potential customers read, but it will also help if you can publish a whole post instead of posting only comments!
To your success,
Martin
So, i think we need to clarify;
Should you "guest post" on other people's blogs -- yes, if they will let you
Should you give "comments' to other peoples post on other peoples blogs -- yes
HOWEVER: the rule is the same as in all social media, don't oversell the product, provide remarkable, valuable content that helps the buyer and not you. Blog spam is a bad call.
