Is it possible to create a private network within an office network?

We have our standard office network that everyone connects to, but I'd like to somehow create a private network within that network that only our executive team can access. Is this even possible? If so, is it easy to do or would it require extra work from our IT department?

Yes by using VLANS and policy based routing. This depends on your exiting network equipment. Vlans will isolate the group but typically they need to comunicate with the rest of the organization. to meet that you need to use routing with a security rule for the members. Another way would be to use secure email or a sharepoint or lotus shared work group applications.

Yes it is possible. Think VPN (virtual private network).

Two sligtly different ways: both answered above.
1. If it within your campus try VLAN.
2. If it crosses your campus then a combination of VLAN and VPN

Most networks have security features that can "hide" or restrict access to certian areas based on the permissions that are setup. For example if an executive team wants to share sensitive information and keep it on the network an area can be setup that only allows those with specific permissions access to those shares or folders. This should only take your IT dept. or someone in your organization with administration priviledges a few moments to setup
