It seems like emerging tablets can't quite compare to Apple's iPad. Why is this?

Here are a few reasons:

1) There is no other vendor that is as thoroughly vertically integrated as Apple. Content, platform (hardware and software), client device. It's is essentially a one stop shop.
2) Apple's user interface is brilliant and unmatched.
3) Walled-garden is a distinct advantage. Although Android's open platform is great, users know the applications they get is filtered/best.
4) App developers love iOS because it si considered the best platform (see recent post http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2845282 ).

There's a corrolary question to this and that is - why can't PC makers create a lightweight laptop that can compete with Mac AirBook? If they did, I would have bought one. Instead I bought the Air. It's unmatched.

I think other vendors are trying to be sort of like Walmart - get to the cheapest possible supply chain and solution. They just don't think about design as well (and that extends to user interface).

I do agree with most of Normaan's points as well. But Apple really thinks about design and usability. The supply chain follows. Others, not so much.

Even though "the supply chain follows," Apple gets consistently high marks for supply chain excellence (despite a few blunders that have, apparently, been forgiven by the marketplace).

No one has been as good as Apple in delivering neat stuff that people really want. Nor has anyone been as good at creating anticipatory buzz, excitement, and demand.

It begins with user interface(s), continues with unrelenting technology evolution, and marches on with compelling - and useful - design. The retail stores continue the theme: it's really easy to shop, get help, and pay in a bright, open place staffed with people who actually know what they're doing and are committed to serving the customer.

A perfect storm of the right sort (and I'm a PC guy for business who can hardly wait to use his iPad for personal affairs).
