Cheryl, the first thing you need to do is do research...what I mean is research about your market. What are their buying habits? Are they mostly online when they do business or buy products and services. Do they tend to reside or communicate in specific areas, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.? Once you know how they buy, especially online, then you need to design your site accordingly. Since you have already designed it, maybe it needs modification and optimization? To do this, you can hire a professional, like my company or you can try and do it yourself...but use Google Webmaster Tools and set up A/B and Multivariate tests. These tests will tell you if your visitors like what they see and are responding to it. It can also tell you whether they get there and "bounce" because of the site not being clear, navigation too cumbersome, look of site, etc. You can use a great tool at Clicktale.com that will enable you to "literally" record visitors as they move along your site. You can integrate conversion points, such as buy buttons, specific pages, etc. to measure as well.
Are you making everyone register before buying? If so, make it optional but provide an "incentive" to get them to register, such as future discount coupon, get on your "exclusive" customer newsletter where they will get product information and other discounts, free shipping, or anything to get them to give you that information. Is your site set up like people shop at a mall? Some people know what they want and so they will search by product number or actual name so they will not want to go through several clicks to get to the product to buy it. Others are just browsing, so products organized by categories is fine, they are just "window shopping". Then, there are the people who have an idea but are looking for specific categories and these you can put up front, showcase them as they are "common" products that people buy. Finally, do you have "featured" products on the homepage? Do they change often, with the season, holidays, etc.? All of these things heighten the experience of the buyer.
Make sure your social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are designed out and are attractive to the eye; by the way we can design these for you as well. This will let people know you know what you are doing and from these pages you will take them by the hand and take them to your site. Another way is to design targeted landing pages that are optimized according to your most popular and effective keyword phrases. These pages can also be used to be links from your Google AdWords campaign if you are doing this. You can also do this as well from Facebook ads and Yahoo banner ads.
Twitter is huge if you know how to do it, I suggest you look up information on how to "sell" without selling on Twitter. This will allow you to attract people to your store without them being sold. Use social media monitoring tools like Lithium.com or Sproutsocial.com and a few great tools for web analytics are Google Analytics, Woopra.,com and Quantcast.com. All of these will allow you to accurately measure the type and amount of traffic you get to your site. Of course, if all of this is overwhelming, my company Mobius Creative does ALL of this for our clients. If you need any help, please contact me.
By the way, can you send me your URL, I would like to look at your site? Thanks
thank you i will do that
