Having been both a Citrix and VM administrator I can honestly say I think Microsoft is a day late and a dollar short in this category. You have companies like Citrix who have perfected Application virtualization years ago (so much so they actually wrote TS for Microsoft), and companies like VMWare who gave away client/server virtualization solutions for years -- that ran a lot better than Microsoft's paid products.
Most of the large scale roll out's I'm personally doing now are Citrix XenServer primarily because of cost. The free version will meet the needs of most organizations looking to move into a VM world. Remember, most people go down the path of VM to save money. Sure its to make your life "easier" or increase "scalability" but that's all gravy. I've never heard a single CIO or VPIS discuss VM in conversation that didn't involve cutting costs.
Bottom line is Microsoft virtualization products are still too costly compared to their counterparts and haven't proven themselves enough yet in reliability.
