I only follow back the people or brands I have a real interest in. The number of followers is not a big metric for us, the quality of information and relations is.

My recommendation is to follow brands/individuals that provide quality content relative to your brand. Think of your brand’s “following” list as recommendations of other useful resources in your industry.

When you get to the first 1,000 followers, you must analyze if its important to follow anyone or not, and must start a meticoulous selection of the TL you want to read.

There's not a lot of value in following any and everyone, especially because you'll see that many are probably using software to follow as many people as possible, and a relationship with these people won't be fruitful.

I go in Twitter every couple of weeks and skim through who's following me, read their profiles and follow back ones that seem to have value.
