I need a better network management system at my company.
Right now, things seem to be all over the place -- almost every network element has its own recommended management solution, or is barely being managed at all. Does anyone have any specific suggested practices or solutions for bringing it all together effectively? Any suggestions will help. Thanks!

A lot of that depends on what your current setup. How big is your network? Are you using Active Directory? Is wifi part of your setup?
I can provide an integrated network management trial for you that provides a detailed list of all the software running on your network, node information like IP address, MAC address, OS, memory, hard drive size, memory, ect. and a vulnerability report. It even includes its own help desk agent! Let me know if you're interested! Thanks.
Hello Brook,
There are a number of proven solutions from companies like Altris, BMC, CA, HP, IBM, Kaseya, and Microsoft (mix of Tier 1 and 2 vendors).
However, before you move forward I think you should:
Determine if your company is willing and ready to make the investment. There is the initial cost for software plus professional services (implementation and training). There is also the on going costs of rolling out the solution to the rest of the organization (especially true for multi-location companies).
To help answer the above question, it would be helpful to have a good business case that clearly defines current and future problems and associated costs both tangible and intangible; and the value a solution will deliver over time.
Depending on the size of your company a good next step may be an assessment by a third part of the company's current environment. A deliverable should include a business case for moving forward with a solution.
If you have a mixed technology environment the challenges and potential ROI is greater and you should work with companies that have hetero solutions.
If you have not already done so:
- meet with management to gauge propensity to spend
- meet with a vendor neutral consulting company (Accenture as an example) to see what they say
- meet with some of the solution vendors and have them help as part of pre sales
- read up on ITIL
- meet with companies you respect and see what they have done
Just remember, there are good solutions out there. Develop a logical plan and obtain management's support.
If now is not a good time for your company to make an investment, conduct an internal assessment, prioritize need, and implement basic solutions (ITIL best practices can help).
I hope you find this helpful.
Good luck,
