I need to know how to find an IP address?

I run our company blog - we have quite a decent following, but we are getting individuals that are spamming in the comments. We delete their accounts, but they create a new one and keep spamming. How can I find their IP address to block it from joining and commenting on our site?

This depends on how you are hosting your blog. The answer will be different depending on whether you host yourself or use something like blogger or wordpress. If you can give me a bit more information, I can probably help you out.

Yes, blog spam is a fact of life I'm afraid. If you use one of the popular blog engines like Wordpress, then there are plug-ins available (like Akismet) that will monitor and block comment spam. Some blogging engines also allow you to switch on comment moderation, so that things can't be posted without your intervention. This is of course an administrative overhead, but often spamming is a short-term phenomenon, and once the individual loses interest, you can go un-moderated again.

Most OS's have programs available to them that allow one to check. And i think Apple's Unix - based ones may have it in their many log files.

Thanks for the help ya'll. It's getting pretty annoying to delete the same users comments every morning. I'll look into Akismet and hopefully I can put an end to this madness.

How would I be able to get in touch with you Andrew? I don't see an icon to message people.

Many companies try to address this issue by having a sign-on process to ensure that it is a little bit more difficult to access the system, and that you can then block by username.

You can add gadget to your site which show the ip address of the user visiting.

http://www.google.com/ig/directory?synd=open&hl=en&gl=en&url=http://hosting.g...

Additionally if you want I can write a custom gadget for you which can help you
