Off-Site IT Storage Basics

What are the basics of IT storage? Our company has hundreds of GB of data that we are required, by law, to keep for 7 years. My boss wants to move all of if off site and off of our office storage network... what are the basics of off-site IT storage systems? Is there a hosting provider that specializes in storing information for companies? Would it be smarter to build a separate storage network & keep the data on site? Where do you think we should start?

Most folks would put this data on magnetic tape & store it with a company called Iron Mountain.

Most folks would use their backup application to perform this. That way the backup application will keep track of what files are on what tape. If you ever need the file, contact Iron Mountain & they will bring you the required tape within your contractual time period.
