I am using Google Application Engine, both Python and Java versions.
Java is still in beta so it is definitely missing some things, but google guys are active in adding new features. Community has build up so it is easy to get help. The best thing is that is completely free until you reach the quotas.

You should check out Hosting.com and the VCloud Express. It is similar to Amazon, but built on VMware. I believe you will find it to be a solid option.
