Interesting question, Lauren. While I have to say "D" - and the actual answer is probably too many, I think a better question from a marketing perspective might be, "How many brand pages do you actively engage with on a regular basis, such as, monthly, weekly, or even daily?" That reduces the number significantly.

[B]

I follow companies that I've purchased from and companies that need me to "Fan" to enter their contests

"A" ... why would I want to follow a company on Facebook? In business and if I want to follow, track, profile a company, then I use LinkedIn and Jigsaw. I have no idea why I would ever want to follow a company in my personal life!?

"B", infact only 1, my previous employer! and that's just because it allows me to keep in touch with them, and participate remotly to their company life beyond the pure "corporate linkedin window", being that one (actually the individuals within it) almost like my second family.

A. I have no Facebook account so I couldn't follow anyone if I wanted. In fact, I actually resent it when companies have coupons or other specials that are only available by following them on Facebook. If the company does not make the same offers available via other methods, then I likely will try to avoid doing business with them. Forcing customers to enroll in a service they do not want borders on denying consumers their rights of choice.
