MailChimp and Hubspot did a survey recently where they analyzed BILLIONS of emails sent (yes, with a B) and what they found is revealing:

There was practically no difference in the open rate in sending any day of the week. In fact, they found that open rates were just as high on the weekends AND the unsubscribe rate was lower (highest unsub days were Monday and Tuesday).

With the ubiquity of mobile devices, people are taking "breaks" from their off time to open email. In terms of conversion and response, there is really no best day.

That said, if I have to vote, I'd say Sunday!

Thanks, Jessica. Here's a link to a summary of a Webinar in which they presented the results of the survey (with a link to the Webinar) - http://www.moongrabber.com/web-design/hubspots-the-science-of-email-marketing

Steve,

I did see that webcast and was able to look at their data and I am not sure that those numbers are entirely representative of the email marketing channel as a whole. Mailchimp is a great ESP, no doubt about it, but their primary customer is SMB and really small players in the marketplace. I would love to see a study done by a company that is representative of the mid-tier and enterprise companies on the DOW as well it being broken out to eTailers.

While I do think the HubSpot study has merit, I am not sure I would hang my hat on all of their results given their target customer.

Good point, Andrew, and I'd be interested in hearing what your experience has shown you to be the best answer to the poll. My interpretation of the results was that even though the companies sending were small, it didn't mean that the recipients were all small businesses. They aren't B2B companies, either, which could skew the results. In my experience, there is no "best" day to send email. What do you think?

Ha. I would 100% agree with you that there is no "best" day to send email. My standard reply to this question is: The best day to send email is the day which your subscribers are going to open, read, click and engage in your email. The only way to know this is through testing. Yea yea...I have heard it before...testing is hard and when in doubt, people say "test it", but its true. Testing is the only way for you to figure out what day or time of day your recipients are going to be respond.

To say Tuesday at 10 am or Sunday at 7 pm and call it a "best practice" means nothing. We have a saying at Trendline: “We know best practices, but we don't always follow them. When everyone follows best practice, you've merely redefined mediocrity"

My experience tells me not to say anything because I would be giving the wrong advice since saying that Wednesday's were great for me would not help the next guy who tries Wednesday's and fails.

B2B is especially tricky since software is different from widgets and each recipient is different.

Watch for my answer below.

Andrew

I love this discussion. It would be instructive to see how the data compares for SMBs vs. Enterprise as well as B2C, B2B, even within specific industries! I have to say though, from the initial webinar link Gershik provided, what stood out for me most was this discovery: "Don't be afraid to send too much E-mail" .... Marketers spend so much time beating their heads against a wall when it comes to e-mail marketing strategies, best practices, timing, etc., that I had to throw it out to the Focus community. Do you all agree with this claim? Would love your 2 cents!

Hi All,

At my former employer, I did track and evaluate the best day to send emails, and for our audiences Tuesday and Thursdays around lunch time worked the best. I ran email marketing for B2B trade journals and we had newsletters geared towards several industries each week (10 of them). For some our other competitors they swear by Wednesday mornings. So really the best day/time is dependent upon your audience and as Andrew mentioned you probably should re-evaluate that every 6 or 12 months as your audience members and their needs change over time.

I think a good place to start to answer this question is look at what days the competition is sending heavily then test that day vs. a day that no competitors send on and if normally send on another day have a hold out group that continues on that day so you can compare all three. For the test to be valid really all three segments (days) need to receive the same email creative with the same offer or you are no longer isolating the variable Day of the Week in the test and it will throw off the results.

When doing your test if you less than 5,0000 sent to any give day of the week segment then you don't have a large enough sample to really make the call or do any stats analysis. You may need to split out the list and send a portion to each of the three test days and then next week rotate the segments to get a large enough sample size to have valid sample sizes.

A really interesting alternative for a weekly email would be to create selection in your preference center and let your subscribers pick the day they want to receive the email - then you don't have to test, as the subscribers tell you directly what the best day for each of them is, just send to that person on that day. Sounds easy right?!

Happy Testing!

Luke

I would think Tuesday would get the best number of responses. Monday is too busy and later in the week many businesses may be playing catch-up before the week-end.

Jessica,

I know I am only suppose to pick one of the above, but I pick all of the days. To be honest, there is not best day and no one has the magic answer. This is like asking someone what time of the day is it best to eat ice cream. Well...for some its anytime...for others its 7:39 pm right after dinner.

The best day to send email for B2B is the day which your subscribers are going to interact and take the desired action of your email. The only way to figure this out is to test. Then test some more. Then test again. Then when you are done testing...send on that day..and in a couple of months....test it again.

Whatever day the B2B customer prefers. There is lots of research that show there are no "rules of thumb" anymore since customers do business 23/7. Again, I would ask the target audience and learn from their feedback.

When working for a marketing automation software company, we always got the best results (opens & clicks) when sending on Tuesday or Thursday. The list was ~1.5M small business owners. Emails were primarily newsletters, webinar/event invites, and periodic promotions.

Based on tests by recognized Internet marketing "gurus," Tuesday at 5:15 AM is the best time to send email to get it opened. Thursday was a close second at the same time.

Reason being is the email will be waiting for your prospect when they check it first thing when they come in.

Even though most productivity experts suggest not checking email first thing, most of us do it anyway, right?

Jessica, the best days to send emails are M, T, W, TH, F, Sat, Sun.

There are no bad days - the best days are different for every company, every message situation and most importantly each recipient. What works for one company may not work for your company. What works for one of your subscribers may not work for another.

Are there days that in the aggregate tend to perform better for your company - possibly. But to find that out you need to do extensive testing of identical messages, multiple times for every day of the week. (You've also left off the time of day question.)

In the end, I believe the best time to send is in essence unique to each individual. Determining this manually is possible but a lot of work or some marketing automation providers have developed send time optimization features that automate this process.
