Real-time IT asset management: "business-critical" or just "nice to have?"

I'm preparing to go to Data Center World in Nashville next month, and will be speaking on a panel about real-time asset management -- the ability to know everything important about high-value IT assets, now. So I thought I'd ask the Focus community: how important is accurate, timely knowledge about valuable IT assets, and how best to achieve it?

Michael,

Asset management is becoming more and more of a must have for companies. My team managers over 600 computer in 4 different locations and without our asset management, rudementry as it is, we would not be able to plan for future hardware deployements, proactive hardware replacement or OS upgrades properly.

We have another item that is requiring us to properly track all assets and that is ePHI compliance under the HIPAA regulations. I am currently researching a better asset management software than what we currently have. Right now we are using lansweeper and it is OK for our current needs. But, we cannot track serial numbers on internal items like HDD's inside of computers.

I would be interested to hear if you have any thoughts on good asset tracking software. Out corporate office uses Zenworks for asset management. I am downloading a trial of it as we speak, but would love to have more options to review before making a purchase.

Hi Michael:

We are an IT Asset Management vendor.

That being said, Gartner found that 40%+ of the time spent on a help desk call is attributed to assessing the status of a device. Coupled with the costs for preparing for a software audit, real-time access to IT asset information is critical to driving efficiencies for IT service management and IT asset management.
