The greatest advantage is that prevention rather than cure. A good remote computer support company should be able to provide you with prophylactic support that PREVENTS downtime. They should have tools that automatically manage your patching, antivirus updating and basic housekeeping. They should also be able to provide 24/7 support for issues as well as a method of backing up and protecting your critical data. Is it wrong to recommend myself? :-)

I like David's comment about prophylactic support. The first thing that came to my mind about remote support is simply a requirement for cost effective support for either internal or external customers. The benefit for the customer would be faster and in some cases less expensive support. Why wait or why pay the high fee for someone to come onsite.

One of the great things about remote support is that for a far flung organization there is continuity of service, in addition to immediate response times. Sometimes waiting a half an hour for a technician is far too long, and with remote support the quality of service can be there in a moment. Remote support does not preclude the need for occaisional on-site service, but it does greatly reduce that expense without compromising service. I have been able to provide support for customers and users alike across the country and world in this manner for many years, and I have enjoyed not needing frequent flier miles or fighting traffic to perform my duties immediately.

In effect: it's cheap, it's a well-known technology, and if you don't always have technicians/sysadmins physically close to everywhere you have computer gear, it can drastically reduce transport expenses and response times.

(And by "close", I mean "within fifty feet, on the same floor". Even that distance can add up if someone is continually trudging back and forth to make and test repairs.)
