Requirements checklist for a new Storage Area Network project?

Does anyone have a good requirements checklist for Storage Area Network (SAN) projects? My company is investigating the possibility of implementing a SAN, and I was hoping to find some checklists or other type of materials that could help us initiate the research process. We have some ideas of what we want the system to do, but I don't think everyone understands the full potential of this type of environment. Thanks.

Hi Trent,
First, I will define the purpose of the SAN......it's for virtualization (server, storage), for converged infrastruture, an option for LAN-free Backup, or even looking for a Green-IT project, as utility cost reduction.

The IT strategy compeling with your business will define the requirements, tactics and the elements you need to consider for your specific project.

I would want from my SAN vendor easy implementation, management, ISCSI so you can l,everage your exsisting network staff. I woudl look for integration into applications and OS's for instance smart copies in Microsoft apps and OS that leverage storage to do scheduled snapshots or clones for backup and or test/dev etc this should all be easy to do no scripting etc. I would want it to be Application aware so for instance I'm taking a snapshot of SQL it will know were all of the different files associated with that Database is located and snap all at once again through an automated process also I can do the same with replication incase I want to offsite a copy of my SQL every 15 minutes and be able to bring it up at the remote site run for a while then easily fail back to primary site if needed. Automated storage tiering SAS, SATA and SSD's, dynamic upgrades, storage additions, raid type changes etc. High density if I need lots of capacity but not more performance, scale linear with shelves not a pair of controllers with a bunch of disk behind them like most Fibre Channel arrays. VMware aware, Zen Aware, HyperV aware etc. you need to go loiok at the EqualLogic storage it can so all of this and more. Their ASM products are unbelieveable, all of the features are inclusive so you do not get nickeled and dimed to death, keep maintenace on system and you get all new features free with Firmware updates. EQL is the only storage that I know of that you can have one of their first gen systems intermixedw with ther 5 gen systems and once its firmware is updated to the same level it has all of teh new features etc. The ROI on the EQL is never ending anyway donot take my word for it call your dell rep and ask them to do a demo and or do one live on the web I think they still do it at least once a week. go here and you can register for eql demo, eql and VMware demo, Eql and SQL rapid restore also works well with Exchange
