RIP Napster. Who's next?

Napster closed its doors yesterday in its merge with Rhapsody. It certainly isn't the only company who once ruled the web that's recently been sold. What are your predictions? Which other once-popular tech companies will be bought out next?

Here's my top 5: (not sure there will be a buyer in all cases...)

Yahoo! - for all the obvious reasons...

Digg - dramatic decline followed by "flat traffic" equals "flatline"...

Delicio.us - bookmarks are out, Stumbleupon and Pinterest are in...

Slashdot.org - nerds are now getting their news elsewhere (even from Facebook...)

And drum roll... Groupon - the model will simply break down...

Agreed on all counts.
There are far too many daily deal websites out there, and also too many articles talking about why their business model is simply not sustainable.

Groupon are currently being investigated by the UK Advertising Authority. Big fines could follow if they are found in breach.

A few of the sites mentioned were useful at the time, but the problem with being popular today is that you will not be popular tomorrow. The companies that last aren't "popular" at any time, but deliver a product or service that people use consistently over time. THAT is the secret to sticking around longer than a couple of years.

I predict that social media websites are going to take a big hit. Surprising, right? Well, if you predicted only 5 years ago that AOL would be just a distant memory by today, people would have laughed their heads off. AOL was king of the jungle then, right? AOL covered the planet with setup CDs. Everyone had an AOL account. Today it is gone.

Social media is a fad just like the fads that have come before. People today are compulsively on-line. Instead of talking to each-other in person they will text each-other when they are sitting at the same table!

One day, people will ask themselves if they really have to check their Facebook or Twitter accounts every 5 minutes. Then you will see a slow decline in people's involvement with the social media fad.
