I work for a company that produces a self-service BI app. SSBI is supposed to enable business users to access and work with corporate information without the IT department’s involvement. Our app bime (http://bimeanalytics.com) was designed with the business user in mind, and is therefore really simple and intuitive to use.

The magic behind the self-service approach is that it lets end users create personalized reports and analytical queries while freeing up IT staffers to focus on other tasks – potentially benefiting both groups. Because self-service BI software is used by people who may not be tech-savvy, however, it is imperative that the user interface must be intuitive and easy to use.

Business intelligence can be complex, but more and more, vendors are creating tools that are more user-friendly and allow business users to work directly with those tools.

There is no magic. Self-serve data visualization is based on the fact that 70% of the human sensory receptors are dedicated to vision while the other four senses share the remaining 30%. In addition, our brains are much more effective recognizing shapes trends and patterns than analyzing spreadsheets or tables full of numbers. Visual data analysis principles are based on the work of Edward Tufte and Stephen Few. http://blog.strat-wise.com/2011/08/04/what-is-bi-30.aspx
