Is seo software really that effective?

I've spent the last 2 months working on designing my own website and am curious to know if SEO software like Link Assistant or Trend Matrix is really that effective in making your pages rank on Google. Have you ever used a SEO software? How do you make your pages rank?

SEO is more art than science. To automate the science side of things, it's hard to beat http://www.diyseo.com

The art side is what really moves the needle, though.

We've had some experience with using a few SEO software, and personally I feel that while these software will be useful to give you valuable inputs regarding various aspects, ultimately the SEO professional/ marketer has to be able to interpret all those inputs, and then formulate and execute the steps that makes the most sense to the business. Going strictly by the recommendations provided by the software will not really be beneficial.
In a nutshell, there is some time savings using software; but suggest not relying entirely on those for your SEO campaigns.

I always prefer to implement SEO on my website manually. These software can provide you some insights only but when it comes to implementation, these software can not perform these tasks preciously.

After a decade of doing it, I think experienced-based intuition is more valuable for SEO than any software.

Google's Terms of Service do not allow the sending of automated queries of any sort to our system without express permission in advance from Google. Sending automated queries absorbs resources and includes using any software (such as WebPosition Gold™) to send automated queries to Google to determine how a website or webpage ranks in Google search results for various queries.

hint: DON'T USE SEO software

I use www.SEOmoz.com for my software.

1) Great for pointing out dumb mistakes such as duplicate content

2) Great for grading your site pages based on keywords you set

3) Very nice for link metrics

4) Very nice for rank tracking

Also look at these tools to help find code mistakes and missing areas of your site.

http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/
http://feedvalidator.org/

There are many others, but I frequent these as quick checks against code issues.

SEO software can help you with the Science of SEO, but not the Art of SEO

I have been optimizing my own websites for years...

I used Web CEO to learn what to look for, so that now I can now just look at the code & see what is missing.

I use LinkShare to generate new links to my sites.

And finally, I use WebPosition once a month to track the progress of the website that I have optimized.

The three tools together, used at different times give me a typical suite of tools that can move you right up on the search engine pages.

My single hint, after your site has been optimized: I put a keyword phrase embedded link to the new website on a high ranking site, so that it is being pointed to by an already registered high ranking site, thus gives it credibility as a qualified resource for that keyword phrase.

The software is good only if you have done a good R&D before. Like we, at Siteopsys also develop various SEO Tools.. so, we test them each and every day so that there arises no problem with the functionality of the tools used.
