Should 'driving sales' be at the top of Marketer's agendas for Social Media?

B2B Magazine is reporting that "search and social marketers believe that driving sales is the No. 1 goal of their social media program".

Great goals, but how should this work? Should marketers be seeking to 'drive sales' or are their efforts better focused on 'providing quality leads to the sales department'? Where are the integration and handoff points? Does Social help integration between Marketing and Sales, or confuse it?

YES! Marketing is about engaging buyers. There is a part of marketing that should be focused on nothing but bringing in new leads and the way to do that with the smallest expense is through social media.

But does it scale? I love social media, but if you have a number to hit...I choose tried, true, scalable demand generation methods. Or am I missing something?
