Should a home-based business just use Quickbooks?

I run a small business out of my house. I use Quickbooks, I assume I am doing the right thing unless there are other things I should think about.

It's how you use your accounting software package that matters, not which package it is. With a little bit of studying and consistent application, accounting and financial management can become much more than a necessity to keep your business operating legally and in compliance. Rather, they become effective tools to help you manage your business better and to earn more money in less time. I recommend an excellent book, “Found Money” by Steve Wilkinghoff that can really open your eyes to just how valuable your accounting can become to you.

If you are already using Quickbooks and you are happy with it I would recommend that you continue to use it. The great thing about Quickbooks is that it can grow with your business, offering increasingly sophisticated options as you move up the value chain.

Quickbooks in the desktop format is an incredibly versitile product. In my experience, the online version is less so but still capable. I don't see why a home based business would need more than this. Be sure to run backups frequently and update the product when such are offered.

But with all systems, you must put accurate information into it to get the benefits. Be sure to review your reports monthly to ascertain your financial health and progress.

To Answer your Question in short, Yes, you want to only use one kind of software. If you were to use different softwares for your accounting needs then ultimately there is going to be some confusion, somewhere. Even if you use software from the same vender. Thus leaving you open to financial complications.

Like mentioned above "It's how you use your accounting software package that matters, not which package it is." Also mentioned above ". . . you must put accurate information into it to get the benefits. Be sure to review your reports monthly to ascertain your financial health and progress." If you don't, you are missing out on a lot of information that could make you more money.

It is my opinion that QuickBooks is your best choice. If you have QuickBooks specific questions, My website has a whole section devoted to helping you with the software.

Since the IRS likes Quickbooks so much I am not a fan of Quickbooks. Making use of your accounting software is the best thing to do. Just look for the features that make it easy to operate with your bank and so forth.
