Should self-employed people have separate social media accounts?
For things such as Facebook and Twitter, would you advise people to have one professional and one personal profile? Or does that make it more confusing?

The answer to this depends on a lot of variables, what kinds of things are posted on the personal accounts? What type of business/industry is the company? etc etc.
Generally, I would advise to have one account on each platform, BUT, if you're posting things that you wouldn't want your customers/clients to see, I would make them separate.

I think if you're posting information about the great party you went to on the weekend, you're probably better off with separate accounts.
I find it does help to have a 'personality' attached to your business account. Being self-imployed probably means you are living your job. Use that to your advantage and inject your personality into your business marketing.
100% Yes. I have heard horror stories from contract recruiters of very reputable businesses asking for passwords to all social accounts, monitored conversations, and worse. If you are independent you need separation and the tact to convert some good followers into personal friends.
Doesn't Facebook's terms of service prohibit you're having a separate account for your business? I think it requires self-employed people to tie their business page to their fan page.
Barbara, you are correct about facebook pages linked to a personal profile, but I am not sure they can enforce a separate account policy. Facebook has a lackluster record on privacy so I keep a uniquely business account.
Issues with twitter are less serious.
Recruiters and resume sourcing pros have had issues with Linkedin. In that world, it is common place for independent contractors to pay to post jobs or upgrade their accounts to avoid issues about ownership.
