Should I use an ERP Consulting company?

We operate a mid-size business and we are going to be implementing an ERP product soon. We have some people in our company who have purchased ERP before, but we're a little unsure. What are some best practices when dealing with ERP implementation? Should I bring in an ERP Consulting company?

Deciding on an ERP system is a big decision. Not only does the cost and functionality of the system need to be considered, but also a myriad of other factors need to become part of the equation including quality of the software, scale-ability, customer support reputation, and implementation time/effort.

Keep in mind that an ERP system will hopefully be a long term decision which will have a mjaor impact on your company, so being penny-wise and pound foolish is something to consider before you decide to "go-it-alone".

If you decide to engage with an ERP consultant, you really need to make sure that they are independent and not disguised resellers. If they are tied to a particular ERP solution, then by definition they are not acting in the best interests of their clients as their "search" will be limited. In addition, make sure you check on references as hiring a bad consultant will be worse than not hiring one at all.

If you want some solid ERP consultants, feel free to contact me at ceo@expandable.com as I have many interactions with ERP consultants so I would be glad to provide a few names.
