Small Business Accounting Software Options?

We are looking at different solutions and it seems like everyone is suggesting QuickBooks - are there any other alternatives - maybe hosted solutions that are more cost-effective and offer the same features?

I've interviewed the people at Working Point a couple of times and they're aimed at the 1-3 employee company. If you fit in the "handful of employees" area, they should be plenty. It's hard to fight the QuickBooks community of consultants and advisors, and familiarity with the software by various accountants, however.

Finding a good accounting system is easy. Finding the right accounting system is an entirely different matter, and can only be answered though an interrogatory process.

A few examples of the importance of this function would include looking closely at not only the nature of the enterprise -- Is it a manufacturer or a non-profit organization such as The Girl Scouts, a retail store, if so do they use gift cards or loyalty cards? Is it a construction company? Is there inventory to be valued. If so how: LIFO, FIFO...? Is payroll done in-house? Do we want to do cost accounting on benefits? What type of reports are required? How do you track vacation and PTO? Do you have one person working under multiple workers' comp codes? Do you have sub-contractors? How many users are there going to be? What security levels do you want to establish for each user?

This is not even the tip of the iceberg. These questions can go on and on and on. Properly done, the result will be the acquisition of the right system, not just a system.

While this may sound very time consumptive, which it is, it is much less of a burden than purchasing the wrong system.

I would be happy to discuss this in greater detail at any time.

I will likely frustrate you, but it will be unintentional. I suggest you not
have any--in your office. I suggest you do the math and find a local
graduate student of accounting or an accounting firm that deals with
small firms. I suggest this BECAUSE, if you will take the time to find
new clients WHEN you would have been doing accounting, your company will grow more profitable faster. Do the math. Get back to me for
any clarification

What does the "We" mean? Are you a retail store or a small consulting biz or 20 employee High tech biz...? It profoundly depends on the type, the size, how widespread you are (just local or national), the complexity of your business processes and other things.

Sometimes hosted solutions are more cost effective in short term but not in the long term. It can be expensive to pay for the software forever instead of a one time fee. Make sure you compare all the costs now and for the next 10 years.
