Is smartphone management becoming a nightmare for IT?

Infoworld posted an article earlier about how smartphone management is becoming a "nightmare" for IT departments. Do you agree? Have you had to limit the types of platforms that you support in your office? Which smartphone platforms do you support?

In many ways, this is just the latest twist on an ancient tale. The emergence of smartphones underscores challenges that IT departments have been grappling with since the early of days of the PC more than 25 years ago. Individuals see a new gadget. They think it may help them, so they go out, buy it, use it, and viola company data is now walking out the door. While the IT department is technically supposed to control these devices in many cases, they do not even know they exist.

Yes it is a nightmare if you do not have support from leadership. If at all possible stick to a single platform. In my experience Blackberry with a BES server has allowed IT the most control. Windows mobile is a close second. A mixture of items just produces headache.

Your wireless group needs to focus on ensuring that devices are updated within your tracking product. If not it will run out of control quickly.

If you are evaluating technologies ensure security is first. Find out what the business needs are. I have found that in heavy sales groups that use sharepoint windows mobile is an excellent choice.

Good luck.
