I believe that one establishes performance and security baselines for all connected devices. Then, monitor everything against those baselines for any behavior that is unusual. This includes solutions like data loss protection, proxy servers, and network monitoring solutions. The only other option is to ban all social media. I do not suggest this.
Sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn have privacy settings that allow you to control who in your network beyond immediate connections (e.g., friends of friends) can contact you, view your details etc. It is worth review these regularly and 'locking down' where necessary. For corporations, the measures outlined by Benjamin are entirely appropriate and it it also critical that there is an IT Security Policy in place that sets out what is accepted versus unacceptable practice.
