Reliability is one of the most important factors when choosing the right internet connection. Your customers and employees depend on internet connection for instant responses, so having a good connection is crucial. DSL can be just as fast as T1, but T1 will rarely lose a connection unlike DSL. The price and speed of DSL is great for residential, but for the reliability and success of your business. T1 is the most reliable connection.
There are two parts to the answer. First is do you need a symmetrical service or asymmetrical? DSL and cable are asymmetrical so you likely are not going to get more than 356kb upstream even though they will quote 3Mb+ downstream. Upstream will greatly impact video conferencing, uploading videos, and other data intensive operations. The second part of the answer is how much bandwidth do you want/need? If you go all IP with your voice and want as much bandwidth as possible for all types of video and data applications I'd suggest an Ethernet loop. It is extremely cost efficient as you should be able to get a symmetrical 10Mb circuit for the cost of a "telephone" T-1 operating at 1.5Mb. Our office uses a 10Mb Ethernet circuit and I run Vonei video conferencing meetings on it all the time without impacting anyone else's service.
