Is there any special funding available for green entrepreneurship?

I’m starting up a green business and am looking for funding. Are there any federal grants or other special funding available to green start-ups?

There are several VC firms that have announced an interest in "green". Infield Capital is one in Boulder, Colorado. Vinod Khosla is also very interested in green. Check out http://www.greengazelles.org/ for other ideas.

Or... you could look a little further afield, there's a lot of money available in China from the government for start ups that are involved in green activities - much of which is available to foreign investors as well as locals.

And China brings enormous advantages if you are engaged in manufacturing.

Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers is one of Silicon Valley’s most influential venture capital firms. They backed a number of successful start-ups, including Google. They have been on a big push recently into energy and have been focusing on a number of green IT initiatives.

VC funding is expensive (though KP and Khosla are two of the best for cleantech) but it seems like there are also grants out there to support alternative energy development.

Check out http://www.grants.gov for federal funding. For example, in the 2009 recovery act there were grants to support manufacturing of electric vehicles (yes, pretty specific). I'm betting there are also state level grants where you live. For example, there is a small grant program in CA what support energy innovation - http://www.energy.ca.gov/research/innovations/index.html.

I would second Michael's comments - I've heard of a lot of local businesses (in OR) that have secured federal funding for their green businesses, mainly in the energy sector.
