Is there such a thing as an inexpensive HRIS? I’ve been given a budget of $10K, and I’m not sure if I have any options.

HRISes can be behemoths. I crave its functionality, but I don’t have the budget to invest in a top-notch solution. Where should I look? Has anyone had any luck with a low-cost product?

Maxine, I think you have to get creative with cost on this subject. Have you had any luck in the past. I have a few resources that I have found that can be cost efficient. However, I don't really like to post them on the internet. If you would like, email me and I will get some ideas to you.

Hi Maxine, We know of several leading PEOs (professional employer organizations) where their HRIS platform is included with their services. PEO are comprehensive HR outsourcing companies that provide payroll, workers compensation, health insurance, 401 k, HR administration and compliance for tens of thousands of employees. Depending on the other services and employee benefits your firm offers currently, you may find that the HRIS platform wont cost the company anything extra.

Great question, Maxine. The cost will depend on how many concurrent users you need, but we offer Microsoft Dynamics GP which has a good HR (and Payroll) system.

Hi Maxine ... There are HRIS providers who provide core services and add-on modules for additional cost. SPRECTRUM is one those companies. The company was founded by a former HR Director back in the 80's and their product is intended to address large AND small company needs so their pricing is flexible. They operate on a solid platform and use a relational database system. The company is located in Denver and you can read more about them at http://tiny.cc/w5vud.
P.S. I have no financial or economic connection to SPECTRUM so this endorsement comes to you unfettered; I just know the product very well and have always been happy with the way they work with their customers.

Maxine, another option is to go to a local university and ask whether building an HRIS in something relatively easy (like MS Access) is a possibility. I created one in Access, and it has worked extremely well. But, since I was learning as I was building the structure, it was a much longer process than it would be if you got a student to do it. You'd be surprised how sophisticated mine is, and I'm a lowly non-techie (although I admit I LOVE high tech everything).

My HRIS includes the usual, plus there are fields for when PR's are due, all EEO-1 data, etc. And in something such as Access (a relational data base), you can also add/delete fields as you need to.

Maxine - In addition to the traditional premise-based, cloud-based vendors, or PEO solutions, there are always open-source options available. Without knowing anything about your organization or needs I can only suggest that this is a path that is available, although not necessarily a popular one.

Costs for an open source HRIS coupled with hosting range from $75 USD per year per employee with a minimum employee count of 5 employees. Having never used this particular solution I cannot attest to the quality, only the availability of the product. A list of vendors can be found by googling "open source HRMS"
