Is there such a thing as "IT" PPM?
I've insisted for years the PPM is PPM is PPM. I've done so despite countless vendor, analyst and user contentions that IT PPM is 'different' than Enterprise PPM. Other than the language and data points, I contend there are no fundamental differences between project and portfolio management of technology investments vs. non-technology business investments. My belief is that IT PPM exists for three main reasons:
- the legacy divide between IT and the business that has fostered the notion of "IT Projects" being "managed" by IT (vs. all projects being business projects with varying degrees of technology ramifications)
- the fact that most PPM processes are first introduced and subsequently sponsored, owned and managed by the IT organization (given the need for IT organizations to defend themselves against the onslaught of work)
- PPM vendors directly marketing PPM solutions to IT
Let me know if you agree that PPM is PPM is PPM or tell me why "IT PPM" is fundamentally different than "Enterprise PPM."

Steven,
I agree that PPM is PPM no matter the industry application.
Thanks!

Steven, I agree with you. The organization decides which project is #1, which project is #2, which project is #3, etc, all the way across the organization, and then staffs the projects accordingly. It is irrelevant which function *has* the project. -- Johanna
