Tips for buying human resources software?
Does anyone have any tips about buying human resources software? We've got a smaller company (20 people) and are looking for a full solution to encompass payroll, HR policies, recruiting, etc. Are there any best practices or buyer's guides out there that I could start with? Thanks!

The first thing you want to do is document and look at your processes (which may provide an added advantage of fixing some that are broken.) Once you have decided how you run your area now as well as what you want to do in the future you can start looking at software. The most important thing I always say about software is; "Never let software control you, you must always control the software." Look into a few products and go through their website especially any Demos. Once you have narrowed it down call in a few sales reps from the companies that seem to provide the software that will allow you to run things the way you want. No software will be perfect and meet all your needs but they should be flexible enough to handle most of your processes. If you find that you would need to totally revamp your processes to fit into what the software offers (unless their process is better and you are open to change), than you know the software is not for you. Don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions. Be confident and don't not ask a question for fear of sounding ignorant about HR or HRIS.
Another thing I found helps is the knowledge of the salesperson. Do they know HR or are they just focused on the sale? I've seen the gamut of sales people from ones that almost the entire conversation revolved around our HR needs and system capabilities to people that don't know anything about HR and just talk about the sale. I have found this to be a good indicator of a company in general. If they are willing to hire sales people that don't know anything about HR you can be pretty sure they also hire customer support staff that don't know HR; and believe me, no matter how simple they tell you the software is in terms of learning how to use it and/or integrating into other software it will never be as easy as they say.
With only 20 employees, most companies do not bother with HR software. Payroll software gives you basic demographic. If you really want a great employee experience (great employee self service tools, access to benefits info etc.) for the lowest investment, look at low cost WEB BASED payroll service bureaus, or look at PEO options.
Hello,
When you are going in for software to automate your HR process, first and foremost what I look is our internal processes, its clarity among all employees and HR team.
There are several players in the market who provide the entire HR suite which are tested and tried by many organizations. Looking at the size of your organization, you can look at www.myadrenalin.com. The site can help you to get more clarity too. Its a HR product and the processes are best practices.

Hi my name is Steven Barnett and I am the president of Planet Payroll. We have a inhouse or online integrated payroll and HR program that is free to you with our services. I have to agree with Dene Kelly's statement above that most of our clients find our "Core" integrated HR product MORE then sufficiant for a 20 employee company. Normally this is just due to the additional cost related to the number of employees that most companies of your size to NOT feel the additional cost is justified. If you would like to take a "Sneak Peak" at our software we have a very short flash demo online.
Please feel free to call me if you have any questions...I am happy to answer your questions free of charge.

At TruPay Corp, as part of our payroll processing service, our clients receive a solution that includes payroll information and a moderate level of HRIS tracking. The product is called Millennium and its available as a installed product or on the web. It's a great HRIS system for companies of your size. Although its strong for applicant tracking, skill, educational background and more, it does not include recruiting functionality. For that, you'd need our Robust HRMS solution called Catalyst from Achievant Software, which costs from $4 to $7 PEPM. If you'd like to see a demo of either, we can easily arrange for one using Gotomeeting.
Just let me know.
