With twitters upcoming integration into Apple's iOS5 and wide use in the CNN GOP debates is Twitter becoming the default social media site for the US? the World?

Paul, you bring up an interesting question. Yes, I think Twitter is definitely on the up-and-up (e.g. twitter follow, iOS integration, usage increase, multimedia update, TweetDeck acquisition, etc.), however when we say "the world" it's very important to realize that American trends do not necessarily reflect the rest of the world. I wrote about this a little while back (shameless plug: http://goo.gl/weSmC) and though the title reads "Facebook", you might as well plugin Twitter, LinkedIn, whatever today's trending network is.

There are many more innovations on the horizon: augmented reality, near field communication, etc. So, our definition of "social media" will change as these technologies become more ubiquitous and integrated into our everyday experience. (also note: smartphones have not yet reached full-saturation in the US and other countries, so expect social media to be a catalyst for all things social)

I hope this helps answer your question.
