Under what circumstances would you rescind a job offer?

What are some reasons why you have rescinded job offers? If you found out they lied on their resume? What else would you rescind a job offer for?

Hi Jane,

Reasons for rescinding job offers are largely a matter of business practice that can be influenced by company culture, type of business, industry, client/customer requirements and nature of the job. Most states are "Employment at Will" which extends to prospective employees. Meaning an employer or employee can choose to cease employment relationship at will.

In my experience I have rescinded job offers for: Failing drug screen, Falsifying application information, Criminal record, Organization restructuring, and Failure to accept job offer in specified time period.

There is caution in rescinding offers and your company legal department or HR executive should be made aware of rescinding offers prior to communication to applicants. For example, you want to be sure the job offer was not communicated or implied "guaranteed" to the applicant. This can become a legal matter especially if the applicant resigned from an existing employed position or forfeited other job offers.
