Angels do early stage startups and much smaller investments. VCs come in much later and their rounds are much larger (multiple millions). A good VC will bring not just the money but also her network of high powered connections. But, this will cost you dearly and you may find that very little of your startup actually belongs to you. You may also find yourself forced out of the company you created. Not an uncommon ocurance with VC funded startups.
With the introduction of cloud computing and other similar technologies many find that they can bootstrap their business with much less capital than in the past. So, if you can self fund, it is the best option. Also, many angels are starting to encroach in to VC territory and some VCs are more eager to do early stage.
