I think the biggest challenge for non-profit leaders is that the Revenue landscape is shifting from a Fundraising Model to a Services Model. Many non-profits are finding that raising service related revenue is critical to survival and creating a budget with a large deficit that will be addressed through fundraising is no longer reality. The good news is that for the companies that are service oriented, there are several opportunities out there to capture additional revenue.
Theresa, nonprofit leaders are often poorly informed about their needs for insurance, especially when the organization is relatively young, has a small budget, or is still being managed by its founder. I definitely agree with Robert that the funding landscape is shifting, but I remain concerned that lots of nonprofit leaders lag behind when it comes to the basics of the business of the nonprofit. The easiest insurance sale to make to a nonprofit, in my opinion, is D&O (directors and offers insurance) since that's one that pretty much everyone understands. On the other hand, I'm not always entirely sure that there is a good appreciation of any needs for liability insurance. When you're out there cultivating your nonprofit clients, make sure to ask them about the nature of the services and programs they provide, and as you hear their answers, ask what kinds of liability the agency might be vulnerable to. I think you'll likely find your answers directly from the leaders themselves.
Since I am located in the Washington, DC area where so many non-profits are based, issues are voiced daily. The two that are consistently discussed are 1) how to develop sustainable revenue in new ways, and 2) how to provide the most valuable content for communities that the non-profit supports.

Hi Theresa! By coincidence, I know of an upcoming event that you likely will find quite valuable … consider attending the Bridge Conference for Direct Marketers and Fundraisers, August 7-9 at Washington, DC’s National Harbor. www.BridgeConf.org.
The 2012 sessions lineup, publicity, and promotion and have not yet begun, but it’s shaping up to be substantive and worthwhile. I am presenting on the commercial/direct marketing side. When I did so at a previous Bridge, I also attended some of the non-profit sessions, and they were really good!
Walking the tightrope between financial and fundraising pressures and maintaining and promoting effective political support from leadership and membership while talking the tightrope of growing regulatory pressures like the Board Governance and other Form 990 and fundraising regulations of the IRS and others.
