As we approach 2010 and embark on a new decade, how do you see IT changing over the next 10 years?
I see three major changes in IT.
1) I see IT revising the IT Service Model. For example, I see tape backups used only for archiving data. Backups will be made exclusively to disk. I see more tolerance for downtime for non critical servers. I see that IT will recognize the Service Model as bloated, providing an all or nothing offering. I think this is going to be reworked to where services are tailored to each server depending on the criticality of the system/data.
2) I see outsourcing being extended to mid size businesses. Fewer businesses will keep technical operations in-house over the next ten years.
3) I see IT transitioning from being predominantly "IT service providers" to true business partners. They'll outsource the day-to-day duties and keep a smaller in-house IT team consisting of Enterprise and Infrastructure Architects/Engineers who can apply technology to business objectives.
I'd like to hear your opinions on how IT will change over the next decade?
