Webstore Shipping Calculator

I'm always looking for ways to increase customer satisfaction with my product and website so - can anyone recommend a shipping calculator for my e-commerce website? Should I try and integrate the code the major shipping providers have developed or go with a custom solution? What's are people's experiences with either?

A built-in shipping calculator as part of your shopping cart system is a good idea provided you want to base your S&H reimbursement on actual out of pocket USPS, FedEx or UPS costs.

An alternative could be free delivery with the estimated shipping cost included in the merchandise expense or to exchange all or part of the shipping reimbursement for a larger minimum order amount.

In any case, I would advise you to avoid custom software because of the expense and the ongoing support needed to keep the ever changing rates accurate.

Instead I would recommend that you switch to a shopping cart + payment processing package that has the shipping module you need built in. Examples of webstore software like this are Volusion, 3D Cart, Yahoo Store and Shopify, but there are many others.

A good source of information about shopping carts is http://www.wilsonweb.com and http://www.practicalecommerce.com.
