What is the #1 reason why email marketing campaigns fail?
I'm looking to embark on an email marketing campaign. What are some of the top reasons campaigns fail? What should I be sure to do or NOT to do?

There are lots of reasons an email program might fail but the biggest, hands down, is lack of relevance.
Meaning that if you send the wrong content/offer to the wrong decision-marker at the wrong time = failure.
There are many reasons as mentioned.
Here are a few:
1) The company is not branded ro well know within their target market.
2) Using a list that is havvested off the interent or compiled. Look for email lists that offer real content that is focused towards your product or offer. This will increase your chances of success since the list you use accounts for 75-85% of succes or failure.
3) No using a professional to write your email copy and subject line.
Hope this helps.
Thank you

Since you asked for the #1 reason, here is my answer:
Trying to get (money) from the customers to soon without understand their real needs (or without building relationship with the customers).
Other top reasons:
- The campaign is not well researched to find the right recipient segments.
- Using paid email database (people just hate being spammed).
- The message in the email is not appealing to the customers.
What you should do: communicate more to understand their needs. Getting feedback and evaluate your campaign effective ness by getting the number (CTR, Bounce Rate etc). And again, building relationship with them is what brings success to an email marketing campaign.
