What are 3 ways to get your boss signed on to your idea?
If you're an an employee who cares about your job, you probably have ideas on how to optimize certain processes. But, specifically if you have a brainchild that you believe will essentially add something unique and powerful to the general business model, how do you go about getting the boss to approve? Some might say 'make 'em think it's their idea,' but what are some CORE components to include in your proposal? What are appropriate tactics to take? Is timing the key?

Fritz: I think one answer to this question is a function of what type of person is your boss.
A. Some bosses are coaches and nurturers. This type of boss very possibly would openly accept your ideas, help you develop them and then support your presenting them.
B. Anorther type of boss might be the type of boss who thinks good ideas never come from the ranks. A key to getting this type of boss to listen to you might be to do good research and develop excellent data to support your position. Then you might be able to grab his/her attention by saying something like, "Did you know that 83% of our customers think that our competitor's customer service is better than ours?"
C. If your boss has a huge ego, then you might develop your research and then just have a conversation soft selling the idea to your boss. You don't want to make him/her think you're trying to overshadow them - just share some information with them. Then, you might go have a conversation with someone who can plant the seed with someone at or above your boss' level suggesting that your boss has some good thoughts about "your" subject.
D. Then, of course, there's the very risky "go over your boss head" approach. Good timing for this tactic would be after you've alreay given your notice :-)
These scenarios can go on and on. Essentially, it's a test of your mastery of your soft skill sets plus building a good case based on data and facts.
Also, the idea would need to show some financial or growth ability, so it is measurable.
