An open source system can have great financial savings for a company that deployes one. As open source, the cost of software is low, and in most cases, they are feature rich. Licensing fees are either eliminated, or at a lower cost from a commercial support organization for the system.
Having an open source system, which uses open standards, provides for a cost effective solution that uses products that are designed around the open standards, which can drive your cost down further by not having to rely on proprietary telephone handsets, etc.
As a company using Open Source, you can in many cases also develop your own custom interfaces to the system. This could be integration into your own custom business application, company directories for click-to-call, or custom integration to vendor databases, etc.
Personally, I am a big fan of open source solutions. They bring big company features to small businesses at an affordable price, with high reliability and a rich set of features that are generally out of the price range of many companies.

However, as a suggestion, it is considered bad form on this forum to do direct advertising.
Deploying an Asterisk based (or other open source) system has many advantages for the SMB specifically being feature rich, affordable and customizable for integration with other solutions. One word of caution is support. Being open source, support is limited, a tech savvy individual sometimes can handle "complications" other times can be really frustrating. On the upside working with a company which has developed an Asterisk based system can overcome this hurdle. You still have all the benefits you are looking for in an open source solution, along with a level of support to limit the risk of an outage with a mission critical system for your business such as your phones.
