What are the benefits of 360 degree performance appraisal?

We have typically done the traditional performance evaluations where the employee gets an evaluation from their supervisor and maybe one other individual. We are looking into 360 degree performance evaluations, but the thought of conducting multiple evaluations from peers, managers, and even customers seems a little complex. The process might be more of a task than we would like and from what I've read...can lead to some sticky situations. Are the benefits of 360 degree performance evaluations more rewarding than your standard evaluation?

I've had both positive and negative experiences with using a 360, mainly positive. It's been wonderful where a manager could not see how his behavior and poor communication skills (or lack thereof) affected others and the team/customers and company.

After seeing the results we coached the Manager and his Leaders and dramatic positive changes were made over several months. We were able to achieve permanent change.

The negative that I experienced was where a new CEO used the negative results of a 360 and culled out several directors within 3 months of his arrival. Talk about not trusting the organization!

Always use a validated tool and decide what will be done with the results before implementing. Educate the participants. Offer Coaching to improve leadership and achieve goals!
