What are the benefits of managed firewall services?

I'm trying to decide if I should go with a managed firewall service. Can someone explain the benefits and/or downsides to a managed firewall as opposed to an unmanaged one?

I would recommend managed firewall, from my experiecnce i have worked closely with two major firewalls that could adapt to any size business.

As a Linux Administrator and cluster designer, I worked with IPCOP for small to medium size, and ClearOS for large size business. OF course Linux is the ultimate firewall every build.

try it out and let me know :)

WRT outsourcing (Managed Firewall). It can play out very well for you especially if you are tied to tight Change Management windows. I am not sure of your environment but you may not operate 24/7. A company providing this service should be able to meet your scheduling needs (for example changes can only be made at 12 Midnight on a Friday). It can be inherently a lower cost outsourcing as they are there to support you 24*7*365. Also they should have the experience and exposure to all different Firewall types as well as a complete understanding of the risks that may be introduced in implementing the change. Understanding the risks is key to any change and to minimize the risk to your environment you would want a company that does Firewall changes for a living (a company success). Either way if you do outsource ensure you have rock solid Service Level Agreements in place so you can hold the outsourced company accountable for meeting your needs.

There is value in having individuals who see attack patterns emerging across companies as they have an opportunity to proactively defend you. Usually managed services also provides the opportunity to have 24/7 support releaving your internal support staff of carrying a pager. It helps immensely with work/life balance.
