What are the benefits of using a cost management consultant?
I am having a hard time justifying paying for something that we can do ourselves, but my partner is really pushing for us to hire a cost management consultant. Have you ever used one? Did they save you money? Why would you suggest one?

Having a bit more info about your business operations and situation would be helpfull (but a bit more exposure than I would risk.) For example, if your business is in crisis and time is of the essense the learning curve could be mortally expensive. Or if you are early in the business lifecycle and tight on cash i.e. need better structure and predictable cash flow etc. then there are good reasons for engaging a CM consultant pronto.
On the other hand, if you are trying to understand your costs and you are noticing inefficiencies etc. then you might do better to get someone to teach you about "lean" operating practices. This will give you the basis for solving you own problems with waste and create better, more effeicient policies and procedures (workflow), now and in the future.
If the latter is your case, then there are many DIY "process improvement" workbooks on the market, some with very specific functional focus (manufacturing, finance, office work, etc.)
