I am a big fan of Starwood as well, being able to use your points on any airline with no blackout dates is a huge benefit they also have a decent amount of quality accommodations. When it comes down to an airline specific rewards program I would recommend the United Mileage Plus program. With United's merger with Continental there are more flight choices than on other airlines which is nice when you are planning a last minute flight. The biggest downside is their business class and first class cabins can be limited at times.
Starwood is the best rewards program out there now. American Express is also a good program, but I'd check out Starwood.
