As a novice to the marketing world, I hear a lot of promises about the power of marketing online. What are the biggest myths perpetuated about online marketing, and what is the reality?

Thousands of followers, thousands of "clicks" etc. We work on social media but, I have incorporated a "pocket" marketing piece into my social media platform, I place our url, company info, etc on a mini brochure in addition to my oline marketing efforts.... seems to work. I bought my online.

"that because there are (fill in the number) of people on the Internet it is easy to get buyers for your on-line store."

Marketing on line and for offline stores is the same think just different venues. One needs to work on all the same aspects: pricing, product mix, advertising, etc. So marketing online can help you as a part of your entire marketing programs.
