What are 'booth babes' and why are they frowned upon?
Is this a legitimate tactic that works? What are the pros and cons of using 'booth babes'?

Frown? Booth babes make people smile. See? :)
Booth babes by definition are women and sometimes men, who are hired to attract attention to a booth and or product via sex appeal. We frown upon them because we like to think we are more sophisticated than that. But their is no denying that when sex appeal is a marketing angle, they are very effective.
There seems to be two ways to make lots of contacts for future sales at a trade show (that seems to be the whole point, right?).
One is building a booth with technology demos, spending tons on setup time and interconnect costs (up to $2600/day for an Internet drop for example), renting large flat screen monitors with live streaming video of the action in the booth broadcasting to the crowd, and staffing it with talented people and trinkets (I have seen grown men dive after a tee shirt flung into the air from a booth).
The other way is booth babes, who attract the crowd to the otherwise empty booth, convince you to swipe you badge for them and then hand you off to smart Sales people who elevator pitch and arrange for follow up.
So being the guy who builds the technology booth, I guess you can say I am jealous and feel cheated :-) But I have not seen ANYONE frown on their presence. Quite the opposite actually.
Look at "Go-Daddy" TV ads for a great example of this.
So the big Pro is tons of contacts collected. The Con is many of them have no interest in anything but the babe (so sad).
