What are the Business Intelligence Basics?
I’m giving a very high level presentation about business intelligence to our mid-level management staff because our company is in the process of implementing a BI solution, and we want everyone on the same page. If you were in my position, how would you explain the definition and need for such a system? Also, what key BI topics would be imperative to talk about?

Any business in today’s economy is executing day to day operations & Strategy by fact based decision not by Gut base decision. So I assume you are aware of you audience for your presentation. I am taking one subject area ( Department KPIs).
E.g. IT Division. As CIO of IT division he or she is interested on the following KPIs
- Productivity (Derived from time management system where each IT resources effort is captured against the task allocated to the resource).
- Customer satisfaction: From the helpdesk tickets SLA and Quarterly survey
- Systems Availability. From the System logs on the application.
- On Time availability of Data: From the logs / Meta data of the applications that projects/ publishes business data (Reports). SLA with business on IT support.
The above KPIs are consolidated by each team/ department on weekly/ monthly basis and then get consolidated as formal presentable information. This information is again compiled by a set of resources that project the information as a monthly operation report for CIO.
For the completion of the above activity. CIO is dependent on multiple teams and systems to get the fact at the end of the month. Once he get the fact when its getting published to CEO. He has 1 or 2 days to prepare Root cause analysis & tactical plants to core correct the deviations from organization Goal.
The above is the current status of the operations organization is executed. If company is ready to move towards Business intelligence environment.
Each key stakeholder (Information consumer) need not to wait for a month to get the KPIs. The KPI are available in online system with data refresh of Daily/ Weekly basis based on the importance of the information.
In case of any deviation from SLA/ Organization Goal the stake holder is well equipped and prepared with plan to address the deviation before it gets a surprise at the end of the month.
BI helps to bridge Plan and execution with out major deviation.
I hope the above example can be extended for other subject areas (Departments like Finance, Sales, Marketing, Operations) as factors that help to educate Business users on Importance of Business intelligence tools.
